The Saint Laurent Summer 2021 collection was a big hit, according to all the Numéro Berlin team. We already dedicated a post to our top five must-haves of the collection here, as well as a review of the fashion-show review on our sister publication, Fräulein.
A good surprise never comes alone: on the last day of 2020, Saint Laurent thrilled us yet again with the release of a fashion film, realised by Gaspar Noé, starring some of our favorite models such as Charlotte Rampling, Clara Deshayes, Mika Arganaraz and Anok Yai. Fashion films were all the more exiting than others produced in years past, but a collaboration between Saint Laurent and Gaspard Noé…? Our hearts, be still!
The aesthetic of the Argentinian film maker is strongly infused in this Saint Laurent campaign: signature shades of red and black, odd lightings and shadows, and a disturbingly addictive tone, luring us in from the very first second. I can’t help but think of Noé’s best known thrillers Climax when I first heard the repetitive and uneasy score of I feel love by SebastiAn.
This late Christmas gift brings us to the inevitable comparison between the desert mirage runway of the Summer 2021 Collection and this spooky, intriguing film. Both showcase the need of a break from the craziness of our world, whether it’s by running away to an isolated mansion or taking a slow walk across the Sahara. Social distancing is everywhere with Saint Laurent, distancing ourselves from the world around us or from others but never from ourselves. The film pictures a gigantic theatre and a hotel lobby, populated only by a handful of Saint Laurent’s gorgeous creatures. Gaspar Noé is also known for his nude scenes, aiming to rethink the rule of what’s appropriate to be seen in cinemas which is very fitting for the scantily-clad couture of Anthony Vaccarello. This perfect match is immortalised through the veil of feather light blouses and tough leather accessories.
I can only recommend our readers to watch this video: weird yet beautiful, fitting for the end of this record year.
