On And Off The Court: Sportswear with a Purpose

17.11.2020, Design Fashion Sport

Celebrating their 10 year anniversary this year, the Swiss brand On has decided to release The Clubhouse Capsule collection which is a celebration of tennis, and effortlessly chic sportswear style.

On, the Zurich-based brand which has revolutionized the footwear industry over the past years due to its understanding of their customers’ needs for comfort and style – while still maintaining the very Swiss nature that is excellence and precision – has managed to land itself a presence not only in the sports world but has made moves in both the fashion and art industries, being regularly worn by street style profiles attending events including Art Basel, for which it is a sponsor. While On has been recreating the way its shapes footwear in the industry, there was one sportsman that was able to take notice of their unique approach to design and quality. Fellow Swiss tennis World Champion Roger Federer joined the board last November, it then only made sense for them to celebrate their 10 year birthday with a capsule collection that was inspired by the world of tennis, but with a 2020 twist. While I can personally say that I have never been able to get myself onto a tennis court in my adult life, that could all change with today’s On release.

The Clubhouse Capsule collection is a gender-defying perspective of sportswear and design, all while offering elegance with an updated urban twist. The collection also explores the relationship between functionality and fabric, making sure that one always compliments the other in each garment that has been created. While tennis clothing has had a few reincarnations over the last decades, On has been able to bring it back again into the realm of fashion by incorporating a streetwear aesthetic which is infused with ultra-high performance materials. Crisp whites as a predominant colour are reminiscent of the members-only tennis clubs, or what some would call clubhouses. Though streaks of cool blues, dark hue purples and deep greens are featured throughout the collection with looser silhouettes all help to blend in the urban codes of performance. The Parka is the true embodiment of what On’s design team wanted to achieve with the fusion of performance technology and urban style. The oversized fit offers a street style look while the precise laser-cut detail created on the coat creates a very premium feel and comfort. The Track Pant, for example, which has a relaxed silhouette and a lightweight feel is a perfect piece which can be worn by both a sportsperson or fashionista. As a regular cap wearer myself, the collections Lightweight Cap maintains its sport roots while having a modern style and will be definitely something I will be ordering. Sportswear does not have to be kept inside the courtyard, and that is what makes On’s release today so great, there is an ability for each garment to be worn both on and off the court (excuse the pun).

The Clubhouse Capsule collection is available from November 17th, 2020, at www.on-running.com and SSENSE while in store at Fred Segal (USA), MBCY (formerly Uebervart, Germany), United Arrows Roppongi Store (Tokyo, Japan).
