When Alessandro Michele took over the creative direction at Gucci five years ago, he brought with him the Lion. No other animal (Disney characters excluded) is displayed on his designs as often as the majestic big cat. The Lion resembles strength, courage, power, wisdom and nobility, which is everything that seems to inspire the designer in a nut shell. Michele himself is often seen wearing the Lion Head ring, which debuted in the very first show he staged for Gucci in 2015.
This Winter Gucci dedicated a whole fine jewelry collection to the house’s key motif. The “Lion Head Gucci Fine Jewelry Collection” consists of earrings, pendant necklaces, rings and bracelets casting the lion’s head in 18kt white and yellow gold set with diamonds and colored gemstones.
Other than Michele’s distinct design signature, the animal motif can also be taken quite literally, as the lion also stands symbolic of the house’s commitment to protect nature. Earlier this year Gucci joined The Lion’s Share Fund, which is a unique initiative raising funds to tackle the crisis in nature, biodiversity and climate across the globe. Under the lead of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and a coalition of businesses and UN partners, the fund aims to raise over $ 100 million per year within the next five years for the protection of endangered species and their natural habitats.
The Fund has already proven it’s ability to positively impact environmental issues, providing a grant to improve critical radio systems for law enforcement officers protecting wildlife in Mozambique, helping reduce the elephant poaching rate to zero, and also providing investment to help secure land for endangered orangutans , elephants and tigers in North Sumatra in Indonesia. Great reasons to support Gucci in its efforts to support the successful fund and pick up a bedazzled Lion Head on the way.
