BETWEEN AUTOBIOGRAPHY AND REFLECTION: THE DIOR SS23 COLLECTION

A truthful fashion dialogue.

Dior Womenswear Creative Director Maria Grazia Chiuri has always been fascinated by the relationship between women and power but also by the inspiring space between opposites: history and future, nostalgia and innovation. Within these spaces there is this almost magic room for pure creativity that offers new ways of approaching creation, fashion and art. For her new Ready-to-wear Spring/Summer 2023 collection, the designer found inspiration in the image of a map of Paris from House’s archives, printed on the back of a scarf and structured around the Avenue Montaigne.

Understanding a brand’s dna and history is one, finding mechanisms to interpret it in new ways is two but to still find possibilities to protect the individual artist is a whole different level. Chiuri, how the brands puts it, traces her own path, between autobiography and reflection. And not even that, the Creative Director again finds courses of action to pay homage to the sensibility and strength of women:

„Women know how to explore magical territories since they have a privileged connection with nature and its vital force. They listen to the turmoil that often traverses them. That most secret realm, at once in the shadows and marvelous, is like the baroque caves that inspired the artist Eva Jospin for the decor she dreamed up for this show in the heart of the Jardin des Tuileries.“ And Chiuri continues: „The power of fashion becomes the power of women, a form of awareness that draws on this attraction to the outside world, to what lies beyond perception, knowledge and common experience.“

This collection pays homage to fashion as an art of invention, redefining the city of Paris with all its cultural complexity. Numéro Berlin took a glimpse backstage.
