BEHING THE SCENES: DIOR MEN’S SHOW SUMMER 2025 https://www.numeroberlin.de/2024/06/dior-mens-show-summer-2025/ Fri, 28 Jun 2024 13:06:20 +0000 https://www.numeroberlin.de/?p=48917 The Dior Summer 2025 Men’s collection by Kim Jones showcases a blend of utility, longevity, inventiveness, and heritage.

The Dior Summer 2025 collection, centered on craftsmanship and the art of creation, is inspired by South African ceramist Hylton Nel. Kim Jones, Dior’s Men’s Artistic Director, continues to evolve craftsmanship by blending luxury and functionality. The collection reinterprets workwear and women’s haute couture archives, emphasizing utility, longevity, and heritage.

Sculptural and practical elements borrow from ceramics in form and finish, merging humble and noble in the tailoring. Functionality shines through haute couture techniques, with Dior ateliers’ exceptional craftsmanship. Rounded volumes in tailoring and outerwear add a sensuous touch. Footwear features traditional clogs, and bags blend canvas with raffia or leather. This collection celebrates global and local craftsmanship, highlighting artisans’ skill and pride.

In the tailoring and outerwear of the Dior Summer 2025 collection, rounded volumes create sensuous cuts. The haute couture inspiration is reimagined this season, sparked by an unreleased 1958 Yves Saint Laurent sketch for a coat, now brought to life and influencing other looks. The scarf collar motif, inspired by Saint Laurent’s “Négatif” from Fall-Winter 1960, is rendered in ceramic through a unique, months-long technique. Knitwear features joyful drawings, prints, and ceramic closures inspired by Hylton Nel’s world.

Accessories blend playfulness and practicality with precision and elegance. Shoes take on traditional workwear forms, like clogs, transformed into boots or closed shoes made from beechwood and calf leather. The iconic Saddle bag remains central, its construction softened with its curves echoed in other pieces. The collection’s materials showcase their nobility in bags with durable canvas accented by raffia or leather. Cloche hats, crafted by Stephen Jones in collaboration with Earth Age, are hand-crocheted by South African artisans and adorned with ceramic beads in Paris, symbolizing a global-local collaboration. The Dior Summer 2025 collection highlights the virtuosity of artisans, embodying values and symbols that unite and inspire.

SCOTLAND: FOLLOWING THE STEPS OF CHRISTIAN DIOR https://www.numeroberlin.de/2024/06/scotland-following-the-steps-of-christian-dior/ Fri, 07 Jun 2024 12:00:45 +0000 https://www.numeroberlin.de/?p=47555
The presentation of the Dior Cruise collection 2025 took place in Edinburgh in the gardens of Drummond Castle. For Maria Grazia Chiuri, the Creative Director of Dior Women’s Collections, it is an opportunity to explore the connection between Christian Dior and Scotland.

In 1955, Monsieur Dior presented his work in Perthshire, in the ballroom of the Gleneagles Hotel. Now this become the narrative framework for the new Cruise collection, where memories, inspirations and suggestions fuse to generate shapes and embroideries.

Symbols of Scotland, the unicorn and the thistle, provide an unprecedented variation of the Millefleurs motif. They are transposed into heraldic embroidery, recalling the savoir-faire of this exceptional technique, a language in itself. Notably, the very same motifs are part of Mary Stuart’s emblem.

Some of the models in the cruise line include a map of Scotland, sketching a cartography of collaborations and cultural encounters. Photographs from the spring-summer 1955 presentation become part of the design too. In a way, they appear as a montage, transformed into prints or employed as appliques on the edges of kilts or pea coats.

The looks are full of the contrasting elements, such as diverging textures of velvet and lace. Certain silhouettes feature exaggeratedly wide sleeves which, on white shirts, appear under little dresses with gathered skirts and bustiers resplendent with embroidery.

Tribute to tartan, described by Christian Dior as «the only fancy fabric that resists fashions,» also appears in the collection. Tartan is the common thread running through this veritable celebration of the kilt, whether made directly in Scotland or reinterpreted. This historic cloth, intrinsically characteristic of the region, continues to cross fashions past and present, from romanticism to punk.

The cruise line also includes dresses conceived in diverse lengths, coats and capes with large hoods, rain boots come and small jackets, which adopt the gray of menswear fabrics. The iconic Bar jacket sports black velvet Brandenburg buttons.

The velvet magnifies an evening gown, and the feathery woven fishnet transfers into long, lightweight dresses.

All these contrasts and unexpected combinations are made up of interconnected affinities. Once started, the story of Dior and Scotland is presented as a metaphorical journey in which the different stages become the subject of creativity.
