Lindiwe Suttle Müller-Westerhagen has launched a captivating new children’s book, beautifully illustrated by Sawyer Cloud, that delivers an important and empowering message: diversity is beautiful and should be embraced from an early age.

Published by Carlsen Kinderbuch, a renowned German publishing house specializing in children’s literature, this book titled “Naya” addresses the crucial topic of diversity. It playfully and thoughtfully encourages children to embrace and support diversity in themselves and others.

The vibrant illustrations vividly depict scenes where children discuss their physical differences, sensitizing young readers to the impact of discriminatory behavior. The story centers around Naya, the protagonist and namesake of the book, a young girl with a curly afro. Initially, Naya feels proud and happy to receive compliments on her unique hair. However, her confidence is shattered when some children start making fun of her, calling it “monster hair.”

It is never too early for education

“Naya” aims to show children how hurtful comments can be and promotes a message of unconditional self-love, as well as love and respect for others. The story encourages children not only to appreciate their own unique qualities but also to accept and celebrate the differences they see in those around them.

Both Lindiwe Suttle Müller-Westerhagen and the German translator Chantal-Fleur Sandjon, who have Afro-American backgrounds, frequently address issues of racism and celebrate diversity in their work. With this thoughtful children’s book, Carlsen Kinderbuch and the creators send a powerful statement: it’s never too early to educate society on the importance of diversity and the harm of discrimination. Sawyer Cloud, the book’s illustrator, has dedicated her work to creating mindful and diverse books for young readers.

By teaching children to embrace their individuality and accept others just as they are, “Naya” helps pave the way for a more inclusive and compassionate world.
