A WORLD OF SCENT AND BEYOND: ESCENTRIC MOLECULES STORE OPENING

ESCENTRIC MOLECULES BRINGS SCENT TO LIFE IN BERLIN

Fragrance is usually something we encounter almost by accident. A trace left in the air, a familiar scent passing someone on the street, a memory triggered without warning. Escentric Molecules has always been interested in what happens when scent becomes something more deliberate. Founded in 2006 by master perfumer Geza Schoen and creative director Paul White, the independent fragrance house built its identity around a deliberately reduced approach to perfumery, placing individual aroma molecules at the centre of its compositions.

To mark its 20th anniversary, Escentric Molecules has opened its first-ever store worldwide in Berlin’s Mitte district. Located at Auguststraße 62, the boutique offers a new way to encounter the brand’s fragrances, inviting visitors to move beyond simply smelling them and explore scent through different forms of perception. Housed in a former gallery, the space moves beyond the traditional fragrance boutique, bringing together fragrance, visual imagery and other sensory elements.

For Escentric Molecules, scent has never been simply about what we smell. Scent is invisible, but it can still conjure up images, colours, places and memories. This idea is already embedded in the brand’s approach to fragrance. Rather than treating perfume as a complex composition in which individual ingredients remain part of a larger whole, Escentric Molecules has repeatedly placed the aroma molecule itself in the foreground. The idea originated in Schoen’s experiments with individual aroma materials, which he began smelling outside the context of finished perfumes. Iso E Super stood out to him for its distinctive character, prompting him to explore what would happen if the molecule were no longer one ingredient among many, but the fragrance itself. When Molecule 01 launched in 2006, this became the foundation of the brand’s identity and a direct challenge to the conventions of traditional perfumery.

Molecule 01 is the clearest expression of this philosophy. On the skin, Iso E Super is soft and woody, while its effect can seem to appear and disappear over time. The result is a fragrance that interacts uniquely with the wearer rather than following a conventional progression of notes, making the experience highly individual. This emphasis on individual perception extends beyond the fragrance itself, informing the way Escentric Molecules approaches its wider creative identity. Rather than prescribing a single way of experiencing a scent, the brand leaves room for association, interpretation and personal response.

This connection between fragrance and visual culture is rooted in the way Escentric Molecules itself came together. Schoen’s approach to perfumery was paired with White’s background in graphic design, music and visual culture, creating a brand in which the visual language is closely connected to what is inside the bottle. White’s work became particularly visible through the brand’s use of molecular graphics and binary codes, translating aspects of the fragrances into a visual language of their own. That relationship between the senses also informs the Berlin boutique.

Led by Creative Director Paul White, the boutique translates the stripped-back logic of Escentric Molecules into a physical environment, developed with input from co-founder Geza Schoen and architect Sophie Schoen-Berianidze. Under White’s creative direction, the interior brings together aluminium, light, moving imagery and sound.

ESCENTRIC MOLECULES

White describes the concept as a curated, almost archival space. The drawers reference the storage systems found in galleries, while their modular design allows the presentation to evolve alongside the collection. As visitors open a drawer, individual products are revealed alongside a screen introducing the corresponding fragrance. Rather than simply displaying the collection, the arrangement gives each scent its own context within the larger installation.

This multisensory approach is reflected throughout the space, from its interactive product displays to its evolving visual programme. Rather than simply providing a backdrop for the fragrances, the installation gives something inherently invisible a physical presence. Screens show molecular-inspired imagery, while controlled lighting and a carefully composed soundtrack shape the atmosphere of the space. The soundtrack draws on German techno, a reference that also connects to the brand’s long-standing relationship with music culture. After dark, the boutique transforms into a glowing gallery for moving images and creative works, extending the installation into the evening. The evolving programme allows the boutique to shift between different modes of encounter throughout the day, keeping the space in constant dialogue with the fragrances and their surrounding visual language.

Berlin has long been an important part of Escentric Molecules’ story. Geza Schoen develops the brand’s fragrances from his studio in the city, where the brand’s fragrance laboratory is also based. For a brand so closely concerned with the relationship between chemistry, skin and individual perception, Berlin has become more than simply a location. It is where the development of Escentric Molecules’ fragrances takes place. The opening of the new boutique now gives this connection a permanent address, bringing another part of the brand’s world into the city itself. It adds a new chapter to Escentric Molecules’ relationship with Berlin, bringing the work developed here into a space that visitors can encounter firsthand.

For visitors, the space offers a way into the world of Escentric Molecules without requiring any prior knowledge of its fragrances, allowing the brand’s central idea to be discovered through the space itself.

Located at Auguststraße 62, 10117 Berlin, the store is open Monday to Saturday, from 10am to 7pm. For more information on the fragrance collection, visit escentric.com.
