“Death of a Unicorn” follows Elliot Kintner (Paul Rudd) and his teenage daughter…
“The Room Next Door” follows close friends Ingrid (Julianne Moore) and Martha (Tilda Swinton), who both work for the same magazine. As both their personal and professional lives are unanimously intertwined, the protagonists share a loving friendship. However, the natural flow of life causes them to lose touch. The two friends go their separate ways as they make a switch in their career paths. With Martha finding her calling in war journalism and Ingrid now working as an autofiction author, the detachment of their routines causes their friendship to fade.
After not having had contact for years, the two women meet again in a difficult but also strangely beautiful situation.
After living their lives apart, the estranged friends reconnect years later when life takes a turn that neither of them had dared to anticipate. Despite the heavy circumstances, they rekindle their friendship and find that the love they shared for each other had not truly faded. Ingrid and Martha find support in each other as they try to navigate life with the unfair set of cards that they were dealt.
Pedro Almodóvar’s adaption of Sigrid Nunez’s novel “What Are You Going Through” shows the resurfacing of a beautifully tender friendship. “The Room Next Door” is an honest display of life and the hardships we may find along its roads. But most importantly, the movie highlights the importance of the connections we make along the way.
