TO WATCH: NUMÉRO BERLIN’S SUMMER MOVIE WATCHLIST
The days may be getting shorter, and Berlin might already feel like it’s skipped ahead…
“The outrun” follows biology graduate Rona (Saoirse Ronan). Having departed her home to move to London almost a decade ago, her time in the city was troubled by addiction and ultimately caused her to be checked into rehab. In an attempt to rebuild her life, Rona decides to travel back to her home on the secluded Orkney Islands. This being once a place she wished to escape, the change of scenery proves to be a difficult transition.
But little by little, the encounter with the rough nature of the islands becomes a chance for a new life.
Spending time on the island causes Nora to reconnect with her past. As she processes the changes in herself but also her surroundings, we watch her piece her life back together.
Based on the memoires of the same name by Amy Liptrot, “The outrun” marks Fingscheidt’s third directorial work. The main cast consists of Saoirse Ronan (“See how they run,” “Little Women,” “Lady Bird”), Paapa Essiedu (“I May Destroy You,” “Men”) and Stephen Dillane (“Alex Rider”), who together depict a nuanced set of characters. The film is honest about the effects of addiction and past trauma, but ultimately tells a story of resilience and healing.
