Sophie Thatcher, best known for her role in the critically acclaimed series “Yellowjackets,” Sophie is currently busy with the production of its eagerly anticipated third season.
Most recently, Sophie appeared in a supporting role in “MAXXXINE,” the final installment of a horror trilogy starring Mia Goth. The film is set for release on July 3rd.
Today, the trailer for “HERETIC” was unveiled, featuring Sophie Thatcher in a leading role alongside Hugh Grant. This A24 thriller, centered on two Mormon girls imprisoned by a malicious host, allowed Sophie to draw from her own background in the Mormon church, bringing an authentic touch to her performance. “HERETIC” is slated for a fall release.
Outside of acting, Sophie is deeply passionate about her self-titled music project. She has been actively working on this venture, with two music videos and the album cover already shot by Jason Renaud. The album is expected to be released later this year. Sophie’s partner, Austin, is also a musician in the band “Slow Hollows,” underscoring the couple’s shared dedication to their musical endeavors.
I find that it’s helped me learn how to be extremely comfortable and present on screen. There’s something almost more comforting to me about putting on a character. It’s a mode I’ve always been able to switch on and it disconnects me from myself or my usual anxieties. When I was younger working on the stage; I felt this out of body sensation when I was fully immersed, and ever since then I’m continuously searching to replicate that feeling of engrossment. I learned early on what felt right for me as an actor. I knew when something connected. I’ve learned to always trust my gut instincts getting into character because that’s usually more compelling than rehearsing something to death in a hyper specific way.
As the seasons progress and I get older I find myself feeling more like Natalie. Like she’s bleeding into me in small increments. I was very keen on creating a divide between me and Natalie the first season with press, but it’s true that a lot of Natalie was a heightened/ version of me. Having Juliette as my counterpart helped to challenge me and fulfill a clearer vision of who Natalie is. It’s rare you work on a character and get to see where they land 20 years later. It really helped to make the character feel fully dimensional and dynamic. This season has somehow been easier for me to get into character because I’ve warmed up enough with the previous two seasons. I’m putting less emphasis on the technicality of nailing Juliette’s voice and mannerisms because I know it’s innate to some extent now.
Never compare yourself! It’s good to be different. Find what makes you different or a little off and embrace it. Collaborate with your friends. Make your own short films. Take in all the art music and movies you possibly can. Take in everything you can in the arts. Find another hobby to keep you occupied on time off. Also don’t always read comments. People can be nasty and foul!
My first film Prospect was a sci fi so I’ve been in the genre space before and I’ve learned it’s all about grounding that other reality and making it feel as naturalistic as possible. With this role it was fun to build up the character from the ground up with the director and costume designers. I went for a very 1960s classic Jane Birkin inspired look. The physicality of the role was really challenging because it’s different from anything I’ve done before. There was a rigidness, and discomfort in her own body to an extent. My posture changed entirely and I’ve never really thought about that before for any project. The character also has an earnest and at the beginning of the story; more naive quality to her, which was fun to play along with and dive into characteristics I’m not as used to portraying.

Music has always been the most important thing to me. I listen to music for hours everyday and always have my headphones in. My earliest memories revolve around specific songs and they serve as stamps for periods in my childhood. My mom plays organ for the church so I grew up with a musically inclined family also just a family that was well rounded in their musical taste. My mom would always play Roxy Music and my brother got me into Radiohead when I was 11 and it became my full personality to a very obnoxious extent. I sang in the church choir so that made me feel comfortable early on singing in front of a crowd then I turned to musical theater where it became much more serious for me. Music was always there for me in many different forms and has served as the most therapeutic, creative and deeply personal outlet.
I think because I’m new to making music in a studio and collaborating with others on a more professional level; it feels incredibly exciting and fresh right now. I went to Asheville to record the EP at Drop of Sun with Adam McDaniel and it was one of the best weeks I’ve ever had. I’ve never felt so inspired and moved. I hope music can continue to feel this way because recording the EP was so special and something I’ll never forget. Right now I prefer it over tv and film but I know that’s only because it’s new to me. Maybe it’ll stay that way and music can take over for me.
I started off making ambient music and using field recordings and samples. I grew up classically trainedvocally and have always made demos on my keyboard with plug ins and samples. But now I’ve turned to a different, fuller sound with the help of other musicians as well. I’ve always been inspired by Blonde Redhead and Kazu Maniko’s recording style. Other influences for the record include: Flaming Tunes, Pram, Arthur Russell, Stina Nordenstam, Family Fodder and Lucrecia Dalt.
I grew up with music always around. My family are big time music heads and I developed my taste pretty early on. My mom is a pianist and plays organ for the church she goes to still. There was always music playing in the house and I always singing and performing. I found Elliott Smith when I was around 11 and that was the biggest game changer for me. He’s been my favorite since the beginning. My older brother showed me Ballad of Big Nothing on his ipod and I remember playing it twenty times in a row. I think music and acting go hand in hand for me. I feel less control in acting which is something I’ve been seeking out in music. For a while music felt like my therapeutic outlet outside of acting which is how I make my money. It felt more like a release. I’m curious to see how things change as I take on music more seriously. It’s the most special and personal thing to me so I hope it’s never too tainted. It’s helped me process and move through so many strange times.

I hope to make a full length film with my sisters. My twin Ellie animating my other sister Emma and I directing. I want to continue putting out music always too. I’m always making new songs and new mixed media pieces. I definitely want to get more serious with painting and set up a space in my new house for that. I always want to work with filmmakers that inspire me and challenge me. I also just want a role that drives me insane and shows me some new perspectives.
