María Escoté’s Madrid studio is a captivating symphony of creativity, with music as its backdrop.
The eclectic playlist that fuels her inspiration includes the likes of Bad Bunny, David Bowie, Lana del Rey and others. It sets the tone for her work, filling the air with the promise of something unique.
María Escoté, one of Spain’s most celebrated designers, is known for her distinctive and iconic creations. Her portfolio includes dressing celebrities like Miley Cyrus and Zendaya and contributing to successful TV productions. But what truly distinguishes her is her ability to blend elements of naiveté, punk, and techno into her designs, creating a unique fusion that sets her apart in the world of fashion. From this eclectic universe springs her latest collection for Desigual, an invitation to revisit the dance floor hits of the late ’90s and early 2000s. It’s a journey that combines sustainability and bold aesthetics, perfectly capturing the spirit of the Y2K era. María Escoté’s collaboration with Desigual has given birth to an extraordinary collection. It’s a fusion of sustainability and bold aesthetics, and color takes center stage. The vibrant hues of red, purple, and neon green dance harmoniously with classic black and various shades of blue denim, representing a conscious and eco-friendly approach to fashion.
“In my designs, I mix naivety with punk and techno.”
The campaign, captured by photographer Txema Yeste, masterfully translates Raver aesthetics into luxurious looks. While club kids of the past reveled in excess, María reinterprets these elements with a modern touch. As an example, a stretch dress with asymmetrical ruffles is paired with a premium limited-edition leather bag and an oversized unisex hoodie, reflecting the playfulness and luxury of the collection. The prints in this collection are graphically striking, featuring elements like stripes, thermal optical effects, zoomed-in four-color prints, and even a playful collage of cat images. María proudly describes it as the “freakiest and boldest print” they’ve ever designed. Iconic unisex sweatshirts, season after season’s must-have, are adorned with this whimsical cat print, as are ruched sweaters. These pieces are paired with jeans, skirts, and denim patchwork handbags, enhancing the collection’s Y2K aesthetics.
“I am very happy that many people feel empowered, beautiful, smart, or creative when they wear our clothing.”
